Home Remedies for Sore Throat

February 6th, 2017 by

Your sore throat can be caused by either a viral or a bacterial infection. Antibiotics are prescribed by your physician in the case of a bacterial infection; however too much use of antibiotics can lead to bacteria that becomes resistant to antibiotic treatments. You can instead turn to natural home remedies that do not involve chemicals or medications in soothing your aching throat.

One of the most trusted and oldest remedies for sore throat is gargling with warm saltwater. The antibacterial properties of salt help fight bacteria, and also helps in easing the discomfort. This should be done a few times a day until the symptoms subside. Gargling with a mixture of warm water, honey and apple cider vinegar is said to relieve the symptoms of a sore throat, and can help in faster healing. Honey, which also has strong antibacterial properties, can also be taken as it is, or mixed with tea.

Peppermint does not only make your breath smell fresher – it can also help soothe your sore throat. Peppermint spray can be used to ease the discomfort, or you can also opt for peppermint tea for a calming effect on your painful throat. Drinking chamomile tea, on the other hand, helps bring down the inflammation in your throat and also helps ease the discomfort. Instead of sucking on a lozenge, you might want to instead use a clove of garlic to suck on. Garlic contains a compound that kills bacteria that may be causing your sore throat, so you can be free from the discomfort in a shorter period of time.
